Yesterday I went for a run on the beach in Huntington Beach. We ran from the dog beach area until the pier in Huntington Beach with the Ruby's at the end. During this outing, Mike and I ran into a Giant Alaskan Malamute. At first we thought it was a wolf or something that was not really a dog. But the owners told us what it was and we sat looking at in awe. It was HUGE. They range from 115lb to 215lb, and I think this one was definitely in the 215lb area. There was a boy around four or five that was playing with it when he saw it again from across the street, and the dog was probably five times the kid. It was incredible to see this dog. Have any of you ever heard of this type of dog?

  3. People breed the malamutes exceptionally big and as a result they have many health problems. This breed is healthy around 90 pounds female and 115 male. The bigger ones are prone to hip problems amoung other problems. "giant" mals are not an actual bread but rather just the effect of selective breeding.

I am the proud owner of an Alaskan Malamute named Logan. His father was giant and other was standard. So we had no idea how large he was going to get. Well he surpassed the breed standard size at about 9 months old which is 90 or 95 lbs for a male. From the breeders I have been in contact with all over the country, they have yet to see a 200+ mal. Many of them look much larger from the amount of hair. Our Logan is about the size of the dog in the first pic and is about 117 lbs. His health is monitored carefully and he's doing great inspite of his size. The second and third pic looks like an over weight fellow and that pup is also not a malamute, they only have brown eyes. Blue eyes are a husky trait. Mals are wonderful with people but if they don't get hours of exercise a day you will see the price of their beauty when they eat a tree or house. LOL

I show my male mal and he is 11 months old and 68 pounds. The breed standard asks that a male only be 85 pounds at full grown which takes usually around 2 years. Storm has champion bloodlines so I guess it goes to show you how some have selectively bred for larger dogs over time. Although when the Mal when to Russia, Siberia they crossed it with a Saint Bernard to increase their size and so many giants have been genetically identified as carriers of this larger breed which explains the large variation in size even amoungst litter mates.

I have an 8 month old Giant alaskan malamute/saint bernard that weighs about 110 pounds. He is a great family dog and he really loves long walks and running around the yard with me.
